Dramatic Scene free essay sample

In what ways does Miller make this scene especially dramatic? Explore what it reveals about Eddie. Page 35-42 Miller uses a variety of ways to make this scene dramatic such as the use of stage directions and how they create a lot of tension between the characters. Miller also uses a lot of entrances and exiting between the characters allowing a dialogue to form, permitting an intense emotional confrontation between the characters. For example in the earlier scene, Eddie is talking to Alfieri in his office, Alfieri advises Eddie to let Catherine marry Rodolfo and that he can’t marry her which angers Eddie. She wants to get married, Eddie. She can’t marry you, can she? †Ã¢â‚¬ (furiously)What’re you talkin’ about, marry me! I don’t know what the hell you’re talkin’ about! † This shows that he is outraged that Alfieri would think that he would want to marry Catherine, but it also shows that he cannot admit his feelings towards Catherine. Eddie is back after an unsuccessful attempt to persuade Alfieri that Rodolfo is breaking the law. He also tried to prove Rodolfo is not a real man meaning he is Homosexual. He aint right quote was always repeated in Eddies speech showing he is obsessed and strongly believes in what he says. From an earlier scene we know that when Rodolfo sings ‘Paper doll’ to Catherine, there’s a bit of tension between everyone in the house after Eddie tells him to stop singing, so when Catherine invites Rodolfo to dance to it, it builds up a lot of anger in Eddie. When Catherine asks Rodolfo to dance the stage directions show that â€Å"(EDDIE freezes)†, this shows that Eddie’s anger has built up to an extent making it hard for him to hold it back. This also shows that Catherine’s love for Rodolfo is growing, making Eddie jealous.Eddies bitter response is three times to repeat the formula: He sings, he cooks, and he could make dresses. .. I cant cook, I cant sing, I cant make dresses, so Im on the water front. But if I could cook, if I could sing, if I could make dresses, I wouldnt be on the water front. This shows that he is insinuating that Rodolfo is very feminine. The stage direction tells us that Eddie has been unconsciously twisting the newspaper, this shows that he has been venting his anger also another stage direction shows, â€Å"He has bent the rolled paper and it suddenly tears in two.He suddenly gets up and pulls his pants over his belly†¦Ã¢â‚¬ this shows that he is expressing his rage in an indirect way. Eddie never showed how he really felt about Rodolfo but throughout this scene some tension between the two characters is clearly conveyed by their actions and words. The first clear sign of tensions arises when the main characters are talking about lemons and oranges on trees. The smooth conversation builds up to a peak of tension when Eddie says, I heard them paint oranges to make them look orange. At this point, both Marco and Rodolfo correct him. When Rodolfo says, lemons are green, Eddie over reacts and almost shouts at Rodolfo. In the quote for Christ sake it shows that he is angry and annoyed about being corrected. At this point Beatrice deliberately changes subject inquiring to Marco about his family and wife. The change of subject didnt bring the tension down but instead back to the peak after Eddies comments. Marco was talking about his wife and how he misses her and children. Eddie compounds Marcos misery when he suggests Marcos wife might be unfaithful. I betcha theres plenty surprises sometimes when those guys get back there, heh? Marco assures Eddie that woman wait and Rodolfo states it is stricter in Italy than and not as free as in America. Eddie now turns his attention to him in the stage direction â€Å"Eddie looks at him now† and uses this opportunity to turn the conversation to his advantage. We can see he is uneasy and quite angry in the stage direction â€Å"rises, paces up and down†. He points out that Rodolfo is wrong, the way he has been taking Catherine out without permission. Marco agrees with Eddie and advises Rodolfo. You come home early now, Rodolfo, portrays Marco as a responsible character.Eddie also points out Rodolfo should be working not having a good time. We can see Eddies stage directions show his anger and impatience. â€Å"Holding back a voice full of anger†, fact that Eddie â€Å"goes to his rocker† and â€Å"reads the newspaper† are significant show of his Alpha male status. Later near the ending of the scene Eddie tells Rodolfo about boxing matches and offers to teach him to box. This scene shows Marco alarmed after Eddie Punched Rodolfo. After allowing Rodolfo to land some blows, Eddie strikes him harder: It mildly staggers Rodolfo.
